Vintage Week: Friday Pick

Wrapping up Vintage Week it's only natural that we circle back to Rachel Zoe and one of her favorite vintage haunts, Decades. Located in Los Angeles (there is also an outpost in London), Decades is an upscale boutique featuring mint condition luxury vintage items from the 20th century. The L.A. store also has consignment store for 21st century items aptly named Decades Two. Owner Cameron Silver cuts a dashing figure in one episode where Rachel considers a vintage Birkin (le sigh!). The store blog is a must read that chronicles Cameron Silver's vintage finds such as this lovely...

Oui, that is a YSL lucite bangle. I know, isn't it amazing?

Happiest weekends, hope you are off to do something lovely!

Vintage Week: Where to Shop

Since I lived in Dallas for a number of years, it is my go to vintage town. So we'll start there...

Dolly Python
Probably the greatest name for a store ever. A great selection of clothes (in particular, cowboy boots and fur stoles) and fun vintage costume jewelry. I actually bought the broach I wore in my hair at my wedding at Dolly Python.

Vintage Week: Favorite Vintage Buys

These are some of my favorite spring vintage buys:

Highlighter yellow a-line shift dress. This was definitely not my size when I bought it, but after a huge overhaul it fits perfectly.

I love the button detailing on it...

Peach-colored shift dress from Zola's Everyday Vintage

The sleeves sealed the deal for me on this one, and it felt very Jackie O.

Roberta di Camareno bag. I mean, a mirrored R in cerulean blue? Total fate situation. Did my research on this guy and love that the original Neiman Marcus price tag was still on the inside.

Vintage Week: How to Buy

Whilst antiquing this weekend, I started thinking about vintage shopping and decided to do a vintage week, y'all. Rachel Zoe would be so proud. First up, how to buy....

It's hard to remember when I became infatuated with vintage shopping. Probably sometime in college, when I lived mere blocks from one of the greatest vintage shops ever (the now shuttered Ahab Bowen in Uptown Dallas). I found that in my early twenties I was moving away from the jeans, polos shirts and sorority T-shirts and began trying to build a wardrobe that I could use as a professional base, but I also wanted really interesting and fun items to mix in. I found a budget-friendly way to do that by buying a few nice staples a year and a lot of vintage pieces.

Along the way, I made a list of rules that helped me shop smarter. I think most people miss out on vintage shopping because they find it too daunting, but if you follow these rules it is super easy and completely worth it.

1) Don't look for something specific. I think this is true for shopping at any time. It's harder to shop when you are dead set on one item. Especially with vintage, part of the beauty is that you never know what you will find. That is not to say make a snap decision. You have to know your own style and what does and doesn't work on you for this to be an effective way to shop. I found it helped to make lists. One being a list of "goal" pieces: for me that was a really wonderful coat, a few timeless party dresses, a stand-out handbag, etc. The other list was for the season. During February and August I would make lists of what I wanted for the season and over the course of the next couple of months I would search for those items.

2) Try it on. No matter what. I hate trying things on, but you must must must with vintage clothing. It's essential. Sizing is not all the same, especially over the course of decades. You know how people always say that 0 is the new 2? I'm not a big fan of that saying, but it's probably true. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a size 0 in the 1950s. My point is, even if you think you're not a size 6, try it on anyway. It could fit.

3) It's okay if it doesn't fit. That being said, you can always alter things and you probably need to figure that cost in to the cost of the actual garment for 90 percent of the things you buy in vintage stores.  There are very few things that I bought that fit "off the rack." Additionally, altering a piece can really update it sometimes.

4) Skip the shoes. And while we're at it, the lingerie too. It may be tempting, but trust me. Things worn this close to the body and this often are usually not in great shape even after a few years. Think about your own shoes from a few years ago.

5) Do your research. If you have something in mind. Say, an Oscar de la Renta party dress from the 1980s. Search online at eBay and Amazon and get a ballpark idea of what you should expect to pay. That way you won't overpay, or conversely, pass up a great price!

6) Dealbreakers. Inspect everything before you buy. Look for moth holes, stains (especially around the underarm area, gross I know), unrepairable tears (I consider those to be anything that's not on a seam) and worn down fabrics. If your garment has any of the above, leave it on the racks.

7) Find what speaks to you. My favorite decade, no surprise here, is the late '50s and early '60s. As I was not alive during these fabulous years, I did my research by watching movies from the era (That Touch of Mink, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Pillow Talk, Sabrina and The Birds come to mind). Just be sure you don't veer into a caricature. Vintage should be incorporated into your wardrobe in measured doses. Always pair your favorite vintage pieces with contemporary fashions.

8) Have fun. There is nothing more amazing than finding a vintage item that is one of a kind.

Weekend Snaps

Such girly snaps this weekend! I had a wonderful time antiquing, enjoying two birthday parties, catching up with family and doing some major patio sitting. The weather was just unreal, '70s and '80s and cooler at night. I know it won't last so I'm trying to soak it all up while it lasts.

Did you catch Mad Men on Sunday? I was a bit underwhelmed by the first episode, but I'm going to try to be a big girl fan and stick it out. It's usually way worth the wait. Also I have "Zou Bisou Bisou" stuck in my head like you wouldn't believe. Why are French songs from the '60s so cool?

Friday Pick

I am so behind today! But I wanted to post this Friday Pick because while I am not currently shopping (I gave up buying anything for myself for Lent), I am actively preparing for the day after Easter and one thing on my list is a new swimsuit. I am completely obsessed with this guy from Shopbop...

...one teensy tiny problem is that it is a whopping $250. I mean, that's a lot for a swimsuit, am I right? I have never spent that much money on something so spandexy, but maybe that's my problem because I have this situation going on right now...

A bunch of swimsuits and none that I like. Also, I found one of my favorite Lululemon headbands. Can you find it in the pic?

And, have you heard the news?

Such excitement! Can't wait to read all about it! Wishing you a fabulous weekend!

Cheers to Thursday!

I had to share this cocktail recipe before the weekend is truly here! It is a variation of the French Fizz I had a few weekends ago in Dallas.

I'm not a mixologist by any means, and I don't measure. Just fair warning. First, fill a Champagne flute about 3/4 of the way full. I used La Marca Prosecco.

Add a splash of St. Germain Elderflower Liquor.

Add a squeeze of lemon and a little bit of the peel for garnish.

And, voila, French Fizz. My nail polish is Essie's "A Cut Above" layered over Essie's "Mini How High."

Office Update

One of my favorite rooms in our house is my office. I feel so lucky to have a room of the house that's all my own. It's been a slow process, but it finally it feels finished. Below is a shot of Benji in my office about 18 months ago. When I first moved in I wanted to paint the office bright yellow, which I did and it looked truly garish. I love me some yellow, but this was just too much. So, I settled on a light pink shade which was just way too dull and didn't complement the trim (or later, the shutters).

I thought about the above aqua and grey shades above, but it neither one felt right. So, then I though, duh, blue!

And, voila! I'm totally obsessed with it. The color is Blue Marguerite from Benjamin Moore.

And then there was the matter of my filing cabinet. My genius mom thought to paint it orange. So...

Before

After

I'm definitely not a home design buff so it's so amazing to me what a little paint can do to transform a room. Moral of this story, don't be afraid of color, or afraid to branch out from your favorite color every once in a while.

Weekend Snaps and Benji's Story

The bluebonnets have blossomed in much of Texas and this weekend's perfect weather gave us a chance to enjoy them. There is no prettier time in the Lone Star State in my opinion than spring, even in spite of the storms!

Also, big news, Benji was featured on From Alone to Home yesterday. It's such a wonderful blog that features stories of adopted pets. Thank you, Kate, for featuring Benji!

Benji spent much of last week (and today) lounging in my office that I just painted blue. I'll post some before and after photos soon.

Outfit Inspiration

Did you catch the latest "Five Days, Five Looks, One Girl" from Vogue Daily? Photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank is the subject, and with a name like that you know she has to be awesome. I am bananas over her personal style. It's so classic, and yet very unique. Just a great reminder (to me, anyway) that trends are sometimes just that, trends. Real style is forever.

Bachelor Recap: The Finale

Well, that's all she wrote, folks.

I think we can all thank Ben's sister Julia for sealing the deal with Courtney. But, honestly, it's not her fault, what a manipulator Courtney is! Who knew you could play the "I'm pretty" card so many times in so many varying situations? I mean, you almost have to give her credit. Almost. At any rate, Julia's ringing endorsement of Courtney gave Ben the strength to make what has to be one of the worst mistakes of his life.

First, to my sweet normal Lindzi: you are so precious and I loved your snowplow skiing. And, major props for being super composed and graceful after the breakup. Those are two adjectives not normally associated with the Bachelor franchise. You are fab. Come to Texas, we'll find you a cowboy who loves horses.

And then, like a Bond villain in a sparky black dress and black leather gloves (I mean, gloves, in a proposal situation, really?) Courtney emerged from the woods...

A proposal came next. I'm really trying to look for the positive here and I think I can sum it up in three bullet points:

1) Courtney: Despite the overall creepiness of your ensemble, I liked the white cape that went over it.
2) Ben: Well done on picking out the ring. It was tres jolie.
3) Despite how much of a shrew you were, Courtney, the After the Final Rose special made me believe you do actually care about Ben. And, we know Ben likes you.

Final verdict: I want the best for both of you crazy kids. Let's make this work. And if not, you heard Lindzi, you can call her.

Weekend Snaps

How was your weekend?

Mine was super awesome. I mean, how can you complain when it involves mimosas, blow-outs, sparkly nail polish and flaming desserts?

I am SO beyond excited for the finale of The Bachelor tonight. Even if Courtney wins, I feel like my buddy Chris Harrison might have a few surprises up his sleeve to spice things up.
