For the past couple of years my mom and I have made an effort to go to New York together once or twice a year. My absolute favorite time to visit Manhattan is during the holidays. There is such an amazing feeling of anticipation and celebration in New York, emphasized by the fact that New York can only truly be enjoyed (during any season) by walking around and looking.
And look we did!
The windows at Bergdorf Goodman (pictured above) were probably my favorite. The theme of this year's decor was Carnival of the Animals. Better photos seen here. They are completely fabulous, my favorite had to be the underwater window. The intricate tiling was just insanely amazing.
We popped over to Barney's to sneak at peek at Gaga's Workshop. Above is the entrance to Barney's facing Madison Avenue. The workshop really was cool. It was on the 5th floor and you saw a message from Ms. G herself before turning a corner down a trippy color-blocked wall on the way to the retail area. Lady Gaga's tunes blasted at inconceivable volumes and people (mostly caffeinated store employees) danced. The wares were super interesting, my favorite was a chocolate Alexander McQueen lobster claw bootie. All proceeds benefit her foundation, which supports youth. More here.
We also were lucky enough to see the Holiday House benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Holiday House is a grouping of installations in a pre-war New York town home. The family who owns the space rents it out for events during the year such as weddings or charity events. As an aside, the house has also been used for filming Boardwalk Empire, Sex and the City and The King's Speech. During the holidays, several New York interior designers transform all of the rooms into dreamy holiday settings. For example, one room is called the Thanksgiving Room and was themed around that holiday--think lampshades covered in pheasant feathers, deep chocolate brown moldings with rust colored table clothes and gold pinecone name card holders (more on that later).
Above are photos of the Easter room. So over-the-top girlie. There was a small window ledge and they put a little gold bunny statue on it with grass and Easter eggs. Very charming and witty in my opinion.
Completely obsessed with these ottomans. I mean, they have brass accoutrement on the side, what is more frivolous than that? These actually were not in the Easter room, but in another area.
Above is my mom in the Super Bowl room pretending to reach for a pretzel--yes, that was my idea. It's about the size of a closet and has a lazy boy and big screen TV, appropriate for a room devoted to laziness.
That's all for now, more tomorrow!
xoxo,
